Health Navigation Is More Than Just Translating

Health navigation is more than just translating.

I recently had the privilege of being present with a community member during an MRI appointment. It made me reflect on the journey that led to that moment.

What started with an injury eventually turned into specialist appointments, medications, therapy visits, imaging studies, phone calls with case managers, scheduling challenges, follow-up questions, medical records requests, trips to the pharmacy, medical equipment, and months of waiting between appointments. And yes, translating for the translator.

Along the way, there were plenty of calls and texts between me and this individual. Sometimes it was explaining what a provider said. Sometimes it was helping prepare questions before an appointment or breaking things down after an appointment. Risks and benefits of the options. Brainstorming to reach a decision. Sometimes it was simply providing reassurance, active listening, and emotional support while waiting for the next step.

One thing I've learned is that healthcare is rarely just about healthcare. It is about helping people understand what is happening, what comes next, and how to keep moving forward when the process feels overwhelming.

Something as simple as knowing who to call, what question to ask, or how to get a copy of a report before leaving the appointment can save you three transfers and two hours on the phone. Little things can make a huge difference.

I was reminded again that knowledge and expertise are powerful, especially for nurses, providers, and healthcare administrators like myself who have had the opportunity to see many aspects of the system. But sharing that knowledge to help someone else navigate a difficult situation is even more powerful.

Helping people understand. Helping people stay engaged. Helping people avoid getting discouraged when the system starts feeling bigger than they are.

That's a part of the work I genuinely enjoy. That's where the passion shines.
